The Dominican Republic is without doubt the Caribbean’s capital of couture. The island has a flourishing fashion scene that is home to numerous sought-after designers who have dressed some of the world’s biggest celebrities. The country’s sartorial roots can be traced back to Óscar de la Renta, the iconic Dominican-born designer whose sensual pieces have been a staple on red carpets all over the world for many years and graced the closets of stars including Sarah Jessica Parker and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
As an island known for its warm, hospitable people, fashion is an extension of the Dominican Republic’s rich artistic culture. Today, up-and-coming designers are continuing the nation’s proud legacy of fashion icons, while students of the discipline flock to the island from around the globe to study at the renowned Altos de Chavón School of Design in La Romana and Santo Domingo. The school is affiliated with the Parsons School of Design in New York and has been named one of the top 13 design schools in the world.
Then there’s Dominicana Moda. This annual fashion extravaganza, which has now been running for fourteen consecutive years, has grown to become the official fashion week of the Dominican Republic and therefore the most important platform for the national fashion industry. Over the past decade and a half, Dominicana Moda has developed into the fastest-growing runway show in Latin America. Hosted in Santo Domingo by the Ministry of Tourism, this jam-packed cultural event is part catwalk show, part trade fair – and every aspect of it is imbued with a healthy dose of street style and shared energy that is typical of such a central location.
Showcasing everything from haute couture and iconic gowns to more glamorous pieces and contemporary ready-to-wear garments, the designers from the Dominican Republic have turned the country into a hub of innovation within the wider fashion industry.
